The relieving officer stated that the defendant's parents were aged 86 and 84 respectively, and received 6s per week relief. The defendant was tenant of two farms for which he paid about £100 a year altogether. He was married, but had no children of his own, and was bringing up a niece of his wife's. He had three houses. He paid 1s 6d per week towards the support of his parents, and had occupied the farm since Michaelmas last. The Defendant, in answer to the charge, said he had eleven cows but was not fully stocked. He had four two year-olds, eight calves, three horses and twelve sheep. He had not paid for the stock, and was in debt and paying interest on borrowed money.
