Military
He initially tried to enlist in Cardiff on the 19th of November 1914 but was not deemed medically fit at the time. He was eventually accepted in Rhyl on the 28th of April 1915 as a private in the 15th (Service) Battalion of the Welch Regiment. His regimental number was 21074. On the 7th of May 1915 he was promoted to lance corporal and on the 1st of December 1915 he was promoted to corporal. He was posted to France on the 2nd of December 1915 with the British Expeditionary Force, sailing from Folkestone on December 4th and landing at Le Havre, as did his brother Jeremiah. On the 20th of February 1916 he was wounded with a gun shot wound to the left hand. He was treated in the field by 131 Field Ambulance. The next day, the 21st, he received a gunshot wound to the face and on the 24th of February, he was admitted to Number 3 General Hospital at Le Treport on the coast of Normandy. On the 11th of March he was transferred to the Convalescence Depot at Le Treport. On the 22nd of March he was admitted to the 26 General Hospital at Etaples. By the 27th of April he was considered fit and rejoined his battalion in the field. He was killed in action on the 11th of July 1916. (Probably at Mametz Wood)He received the 1914-1915 Star Medal.
