Joseph Purdy

Joseph Purdy, son of Francis Purdy and Mary Brundage, was born about 1 6 5 3 and died Oct 29 1709. His father died when he was five years of age a n d h e was reared in the home of his stepfather, John Hoyt, in Rye, New Y o r k. He was prominent in Westchester County, New York, which he represe n t ed in the Colonial Legislature in 1693 and again from 1702 to 1709. H e a l so served as Justice of the Peace and Supervisor of the town of Rye a n d i n 1677 he was appointed surveyor by the Crown. He purchased from hi s f a ther-in-law, Richard Ogden, his house and eight acres of land "on t he h i ghway that goeth to the mill." The house stood on a knoll just sou th o f t he road to Milton. The home was one of comfort and hospitality. I n 1 7 01 he bought lands in Northcastle, where some of his descendants se tt l ed. In 1697 he, with four others, was appointed "to see to building a h o u se of worship, and the finding of a minister." He was devoted to the i n t erests of the Episcopal Church until his death. His will was probate d o n O ct. 5?, 1709 and is in the New York Historical Society Collection .
