But she had an adventurous spirit and st r o ng soul. She snuck out of her bedroom window when she was 15 years ol d t o a ttend a Saturday dance in town. Her dad was strict because she wa s h i s only daughter and he didn't believe in dancing. She almost got aw ay w i th it, until a cousin came by and bragged about Granny being the " bel l o f the ball". Her dad was not happy. She got married the first tim e w h en she was 16 years old and had my Uncle Bill 4 days after her 17th b i r thday. When her husband abused her; getting drunk, gambling away thei r m o ney, running around with rips [loose women] and making her stay hom e w i th his mother; she left him. She pried open her bedroom window [his m o t her had locked her in], put a blanket over the sill and crawled out w i t h her baby tied to her back. It was a good 3-4 foot drop to the groun d , b ut she jumped out and walked across town to her parent's home. She d i v orced her husband [George Clyde Stack], even though that was practica l l y unheard of in 1920. She worked hard, raised my Uncle Bill, and marr i e d my grandfather in 1932. She had my Dad that year. Later, she divorc e d J erry before my dad was 6 years old, for the same reasons she divorc e d h er first husband. She made sweaters at Pine State Mills for more th a n 3 5 years, walking to work because she didn't drive. She took care of m y d a d & uncle Bill; worked, attended church, took care of her mother, I da M a e Lowry Davis, and later her aunts, Grace Stewart Lowry and Marie L ow r y, for the rest of her life.
