Samuel G. Midkiff

Samuel's son, Charles Fisher MIDKIFF while living in Oklahomatold his f a m ily that his father was a blacksmith on the Anchor andHope Plantation n e a r Fort Chiswell in Virginia. At some point duringthat time, Samuel l e f t home to find work, and his wife, Rebecca,strayed from the marriage, r e s ulting in Samuel's filing for divorcein Wytheville, VA in 1878. Both h e r a nd Rebecca remarried. He in1878 a few weeks after the divorce to S a r ah E. HURLEY. She to RobertSHAFER in 1880, he having been the co-re s p ondent in the divorceproceedings. Neither parent assumed responsibili t y f or the children.In Robert SHAFER's deposition at the time of the di v o rce, he reportedthat he and Rebecca committed adultery "numerous time s " w hile Samuelwas away working as a blacksmith. Samuel was killed in a m i n e cave-in at the Crawford Mine nearHillsville, VA, around March 16, 1 8 9 3--a newspaper article dated thatdate reported of his death. Samu e l w as 33 when he married Sarah E. HURLEY in 1878, so he wasborn about 1 8 4 6.
