Johann Wolfgang Koppenhofer

A Hanns Wolff Koppenhofer sold his farm in Rublingen, Germany in 1732 t o J o h ann Michael Franck. Also, he paid taxes there in 1732. According t o s o m eone doing research on the Smyser (Schmeisser) family (Smyser Fami ly i n A m erica1731-1931), it was learned that Anna Catharina, the young est d a u ghter of Wolff Copenhaver, was born in Rublingen. It would be f airl y s a fe to assume, therefore, that the Wolff Copenhaver, of the Pens ilv an i a Merchant passenger list was the same one who sold his farm in R ub l i ngen in 1732. Johann Wolfgang Koppenhaver and his wife, Anna Maria, a r r ived in Philad elphia, September 11, 1732 on the ship "Pensilvania Me r c hant"; John Ste dtman, Commander, out ofRotterdam. They were from Wu r t temberg, German y and with them were their children, except for Johan n T h omas who arriv ed earlier (September 11, 1728). Forty-two Palatine f a m ilies were on b oard this vessel and many of them settled near Johann W o l fgang and Joha nn Thomas and their families, and their families inter m a rried as will b e noted. The Wolfgang Koppenhaver family settledon a f a r m not far from thieir s on John Thomas in Heidelberg Township, Lancas t e r County, near Myerstown , PA. In 1736 Wolfgang Koppenhaver's name a p p ears on a petition for o r about a road in Heidelberg Township. Prior t o 1 7 43the family attend ed Reith's (Reed's) Church, Stouchburg, PA. In 1 7 4 3 they beame charter m embers of Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church b e t ween Myerstown and Stou chburg. He and some of the older members of h i s f amily are believed bu ried in the older part of the church cemetery . W o lfgang Koppenhofer was a farmer, but there has been no evidence fou nd o f h i s having owned land inPennsylvania. It is likely that he cont inue d t o f arm the land on which he settled when he first came to Penns ylvan i a f or as long as he was able to do so. There does seem to be som e evi d e nce that he spent the last few years ofhis life in the home of h is s o n , Michael.
