After Robert was killed by the Indians, Winnie was left with seven, po s s ibly eight, children to raise. It is believed that she died in 1784 b e c ause she is not listed on the Tax List. She was in the 1783 Tax List , w i th no white males in the household of taxable age. No information h a s b een found as to what happened to Winnie after the death of Robert. I t i s p ossible she remarried, probably in Russell County, VA, but the ma rr ia ge register burned in a fire during the late 1800's. Family legend s a y s that she moved to Indiana with her oldest son, Charles,and died the r e , but no proof exists. Winnie was the daughter of STEPHEN CLAYTON b o r n 1705 and died 1784 in S tokes County, NC. Stephen was the son of W I L LIAM CLAYTON born about 16 30 in England and died about 1706 in Richm o n d County, VA.
