On the tax list of 1783 in Greene County, NC, he was t ax e d o n 200acres of land, three Negro slaves, seven horses and thirtee n h e a d of cattle. Later, Greene County became part of Tennessee. The story has bee n told a n d written that Charles Kilgore first married W inney Clayton, w ho die d i n 1784. It has further been told that he marr ied a second ti me to a M i ss McIllhaney, the daughter of James McIllhane y. The daught er of Ja m es McIllhaney was Louise McIllhaney born January 2 9, 1799. S he marr i ed May 20, 1822 to Charles Jordan Kilgore, who was b orn 1790 a nd die d i n 1837 (Orange County, NC records). These dates are t oo late f or C h arles Kilgore of Kings Mountain fame.
