Harry Guzik

(Mar 1875 - )

Harry Guzik was a top lieutenant in the Capone organization, and he wa s c h iefly in charge of prostitution operations. His was one of Chicago' s g r eat crime families: his brother Jake ("Greasy Thumb") was also a Ca po n e man, and his father, Max, was a Levee saloon-owner and political a f f iliate of Alderman Michael "Hinky Dink" Kenna. One of Guzik's maj o r b rothels was the disorderly hotel at 516 S. Wabash. According to a r e p ort in the Chicago Daily News, aggressive "ropers" on the street in f r o nt of the hotel would ballyhoo customers inside, promoting its offeri n g s "like barkers at a street carnival." Besides the female employees, t h e h otel also was home to a few small-time crooks and street enforcers f o r t he Capone syndicate. David Bullock, a 19 year old thief, was a resi d e nt at the time of his arrest, when he confessed to robbing five Engle w o od candy stores. Interestingly, this wasn't the first brothel at this a d d ress. In 1908 and 1910, a brothel run by Grace Graves was raided by t h e p olice here. The lot was subdivided in 1890 from that just north of i t , w here the Congress Bank building sits, both of which were originally o w n ed by the McCormick family. The hotel was built in the mid-1890s, and s u b stantially renovated in 1918, before it was purchased by Capone in th e e a rly 1920s. The hotel has since been demolished and all that rem ai n s is a parking lot. -- MERGED NOTE ------------ Harry Guzik was a top lieutenant in the Capone organization, and he wa s c h iefly in charge of prostitution operations.
