There was a time when I could recall
the bubbling of his childish laugh,
the scent of his baby-soft skin, and
how tall he was when he ran around the table.
Perhaps his brown eyes were like my own,
or like his father's,
You think you will never forget.
Then decades roll by stuffed with our lives
and the lives of our five later-born children
and grandchildren, too.
And the memories of our first son,
our special son, seem like the fragments
of some half-remembered dream.
But, this I know. This I can tell you.
The space he held in my heart,
the space he took in my arms
was just.... this BIG.
So-o-o-o BIG, my little son.
You see
the empty space is still there.
