The following obit appeared October 12, 2005, online at Gazette.net:"Former Wootton High field hockey standout Julie Nagel died on Saturday morning from Injuries sustained in a car accident on Friday. Nagel: a sophomore at Appalachian State University (NC): was l8 years old. Nagel was critically injured while traveling to her home In Gaithersburg Friday, where she was planning to spend fall break. She was transported to Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem N. C., where she died early Saturday morning. "It was a huge shock:" said former Wootton field hockey coach Steve Swift "Just unbelievable. Of all the people. I found out Saturday. Current Patriots coach Mike Parrish called and told me. The only word you can use is shock. It's a horrible thing." Nagel was an All-Gazette first-team defender as a senior in 2003 at Wootton. She finished with three goals and two assists that season. Nagel was an honorable-mention selection in 2002 as well.
"She was terrific," Swift said. 'You come across these special kids when you're coaching that you'll remember for a longtime and she was one of those." She was a big leader in the school. A lot of the kids knew her and admired her. She was the captain of the field hockey and lacrosse teams. She was a very good student too. She was just very well-rounded. She was a much-loved kid. Nagel, who was majoring in elementary education and was a member of the Appalachian State's athletic academic honor roll, appeared in eight matches, including two starts, for the Mountaineers this fall. "On behalf of the entire Appalachian family, I would like to share my deepest condolences with Julie's family, friends, sorority sisters, teammates and coaches:" said ASC athletics director Charlie Cobb on the school 's Web site. "We appreciate the support of everyone who keeps the Nagel family and all of those who were close to Julie in their thoughts and prayers." A memorial service for Nagel will be held today at 1 p.m. at River Road Unitarian Church in Bethesda."
