The following appeared in the September 23, 2006, Cleveland Plain Dealer:"William 'Bill' Belman owned a lumber business, developed real estate and was a member of Beechmont Country Club for 57 years, but eased away from golf to have more time for volunteer duties as an auxiliary deputy sheriff. He died Tuesday at Hillcrest Hospital. He was 87. He served as a dollar-a-year deputy under Cuyahoga County Sheriffs Ralph Krieger and Gerald McFaul. He donned a uniform to serve with a color guard at events and rode a motorcycle in parades. He often worked in the County Jail on Easter and Christmas holidays so the regular staff could be home with their families. He was born in Cleveland. He attended East Technical High School. During World War Il, he was a lieutenant in the Army Air Forces. He became a lumber salesman and eventually opened his own Belmont Lumber Co. In the 1960's he moved his lumber yard from the Flats to East 49th Street near Harvard Avenue and opened other yards in Youngstown and Toledo. He also purchased vacant factory buildings throughout the area. He refurbished hem and converted them to multi-tenant sites. "He owned a million square feet of rental property," a son, Steve, said. He got out of the lumber business in 1982. He moved to Delray Beach, Fla., where he was a member of Hamlet Country Club for 29 years, but he continued to maintain a home in Beachwood. He was married to the former Renee Moshontz. He was a member of Forest City Masonic Lodge and of Temple Israel in Mayfield Heights.
