He was employed as a receiving clerk in a wholesale drug business earning $1716 per year. He had worked 40 hours in the previous week and 52 weeks in 1939. The following obit appeared in the 1982 Chicago Tribune on page 75:"Betty Splwak, nee Dondon, beloved wife of Phillip: loving mother of Arlene (Alden) Richman and Richard (Sandra); dear grandmother of Karen, Bonnie and Robin Richman and Stacy, Lorrie and David Spiwak; loving sister of Gladys Seltzer, Adele Wolf. the late Francis Shore, Gertrude Ulis, Jack Dondon and Mary Jason. Funeral services 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 7. 1982, at B'nai Torah, 2789 Oak St., Highland Park. Interment Shalom Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the. Betty Spiwak B'nai Torah Memorial Fund, Highland Park. Ill. 60035. Information 433 7100."
