Individual Details
Marten Ryerson
(14 May 1637 - 1687)
Marten was the son of Reijer Reijersz and Marritje Francen. Marten arrived in this country with his brother Adriaen about 1646 and settled in Breuckelen, on the Island of Nassau, (Long Island), in what is now New York.
Marten was an early member of the 1st Church of Brooklyn becoming a member March 25, 1663.
He nearly always used the name Reijersen after he came to New Amsterdam. The Dutch did not have a letter for y in their alphabet but instead used ij . Record keepers in New Amsterdam, however, often failed to add the dots over those letters, an oversight which soon caused this Dutch name to look and be spelled as Reyersen.
