The probate record of John Clements

Robert Clements, the brother of John, was granted administration of his estate 27 September 1659. The inventory was taken.  As part of the settlement of the estate, Robert brought information to probate court related to his expenses in the last tragic journey of this family.  This is the main source of information related to the fate of the family.  The first petition in September, 1659 relates “that wheras our Nere and deare Brother John Clements By the all disposeing hand of gods providence with his family was Drowned [as we undoubtedly Beleive] and by our cleare Knowlidge by his divers Leters he did very Ernestly solicit his yonger Brother Robert Clements to Come over with as a guid to his Wife & children to Irland. . .”
John Clements had returned to Britain sometime after 1656,and after being there decided to settle in Ireland with two of his brothers.  He had left his wife and four young daughters in New England, but then arranged for his brother Robert to travel from England to New England, retrieve his wife and children, and bring them back to Ireland.  Robert Clements took his wife and three young children on the trip to retrieve John’s wife and children and things went terribly awry.  The trip to New England went as planned, but on the return trip in the Spring, 1658, the ship was captured and the families were taken to Spain and held in captivity for several months.  They then somehow escaped, except one of the daughters of John was left behind in Spain (it is not sure whether she had died or was left for some other reason).  Robert with the families made it back to England.  John, his wife, and three remaining daughters set sail for Ireland but never made it.  The ship was lost at sea and all persons aboard were presumed drowned in July 1659.
Robert’s petitions to the probate Court include a documentation of his expenses for the trip, plus consideration for the total disruption of his life for a year, plus his family being held captive in Spain.

John Clements was born in England and had come to New England in 1642 with his father and older brother Job.  He met and married Sarah Osgood in 1648 and they had four daughters.
