Jacob Stevens; born November 7, 1725 in Andover Massachusetts married Tabitha Farnum in 1748. Jacob moved to Bridgton Maine in the summer of 1768. Jacob was the 2nd settler to arrive in Bridgton, the first in Bridgton proper, the first settler having settled in North Bridgton. Jacob built a saw and grist mill on the lower part of the brook between Crotched pond (now Highland Lake] and Long Pond [now Long Lake]. The brook now bears the name Stevens Brook. Jacob Stevens recieved from the proprietors five acres of land along the stream, one right of land and a lot number 8 in range 4 with sole privilege of the stream so long as he should keep the mill in repair. Mr Stevens and his wife are mentioned as being charter members of the First Congregational Church, that was organized in August 1774,and the name of Jacob Stevens stands first on its roll of membership.
