William Van Winkle Abbott

William Van Winkle Abbott, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred P. Abbott of Waquoit, died early Tuesday night at Cape Cod hospital after an illness of slightly more than two weeks. He was 16. William underwent an appendicitis operation July 23. Last week complications set in.

He was born in Worcester, October 7, 1921, the son of Fred P. and Vera E. Abbott. He lived for a period in Centerville before the family moved to Falmouth in 1929. A junior at Lawrence high school last year, he played on the football and basketball teams. He was slated to be a regular on the 1938 football squad and played regularly with the undefeated second basketball team. He was a Boy Scout of the Falmouth troop. Last summer he reported the activities of the National Jamboree in Washington, D.C. for The Enterprise. He was a member of the First Congregational Church.

Besides his parents he leaves four brothers, Frederick E., of Jackson Heights, L. I., Robert, Donald, and John, all of Falmouth, and a sister, Miss Constance Abbott. Funeral and burial services were held yesterday afternoon at Melrose cemetery, Brockton, with the Rev. Ralph F. Long, pastor of the First Congregational church, officiating.
