Military
Thomas Young of Cornishmade an application on 8 April 1818 for a pension based on his service in theRevolution. About 1 May 1775, he enlisted from Brookfield, Massachusetts as aprivate in the company of Capt. Sylvanus Walker and regiment of Col. Danielsonof the Continental army for a term of eight months. At the expiration of thatterm, he enlisted for one year in the company of Capt. Carter of the Continentalarmy. He had further enlistments in 1780 and 1781, this last enlistment for aterm of three years in the company of Capt. Thomas Hunt and regiment of Col.Henry Jackson. His final discharge was at West Point on 30 June 1784. He was atthe Battle of White Plains. Thomas was credited with five years, 11 monthsservice.[1]On 18 July 1820, ThomasYoung aged 66 years and resident of Cornish provided additional information onhis circumstances. His occupation was husbandry and tanner, but he was unableto work due to rheumatism in “every part of my body.” His household was hiswife Sarah aged sixty-one years in November of tolerable health, daughter MaryYoung about aged twenty-two who had a number of afflictions, and young sonLyman aged eighteen. He gave the total value of his property as $354.99. Othersupporting statements reported that his first wife died in the summer of 1792leaving him with small children. He then married Sarah Chase, the widow of PeterChase. After his marriage, Thomas Young resided on the former farm property ofPeter Chase. The record also gives that his wife Sarah died in May 1826.On 21 October 1823, MaryYoung aged 26 years of Cornish and daughter of Thomas Young provided astatement in support of his application.
