Military
On 4 September 1832, Josiah Rogers, aged seventy-one, at that time residing at Windham in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania made declaration related to his application for pension. In May 1779 while residing in Canterbury, he enlisted for a period of three months in a militia company under the command of Capt.Joseph Burgess. He was at Chatham and Groton serving guard duty, saw no battles at that enlistment, and returned home at the end of his term. In March 1782 he again enlisted in the state militia under Captain Daniel Allen. At that time,he enlisted as the substitute for Deacon Jacob Winters and David Dodge who were older men. Winters and Dodge paid Josiah five dollars apiece for a bounty.Josiah became sick with smallpox so did not initially march with the company but joined them about one month later at Horse Neck. The company was attached to the regiment commanded by Col. Samuel Caufield. He stayed at Horse Neck until April 1783 at the end of his term. He reported being born in Canterbury on 4 December 1760 and he resided in Canterbury until 1809 when he moved to Pennsylvania.On 17 April 1844, widow Ruth Rogers aged eighty years appeared in Wyoming County related to her widow’s pension application. She reported her marriage to Josiah occurred 2 October 1786. On 17 April 1844,daughter Lucy Arms aged fifty-four of Windham, PA made a statement in support of her mother’s application. On 18 April 1844, daughter Polly Asenath Alworth aged fifty-seven of Windham township also gave a statement.
A court hearing related to payments to the survivors of Josiah and Ruth was held at Auburn, Cayuga, New York on 24 June 1846 and identified the following living children: Polly Alworth, Lucy Armis, and A. G. Rogers all of Mehoopany, PA; Ruby Miller of Washington, PA; Gustavus A. Rogers of Albany,PA; and Artemesia Estell of Burlington, PA.[1]
