Henry Stephens

(Abt 1762 - 30 Jul 1848)

"In Windsor, March 6, Mrs. Polly Stevens, relict of the late Mr. Henry Stevens, in the 74th year of her age. Mrs. Stevens was a true representative of the old school of American Women, whose force of character so much aided in the achievement of our Independence. As a woman of sterling integrity, of untiring industry, of indomitable perseverance in the fulfilment of duty, she may well be regarded as a model of moral worth. She was a sympathizing friend, a kind neighbor, and an exemplary member of the household and of society. This is the record of her memory here. But there is, we trust, a far more blessed, more abiding, more holy record on high; for, more than all these, she was a Christian. She was a consistent member of the church of Christ, in which she exemplified the graces which adorn the true profession of a faith in God our Redeemer. She had been a faithful member of St. Paul's church for forty years, ever constant in her attendance, and in the duties of prayer and praise in the house of God. She died in peace, and having finished her course with joy, has gone we trust to the reward of the faithful in Christ Jesus."

(The notice of her death from The Vermont Journal March 13, 1857.)
