Hannah Crowninshield

Oil painting of Commodore James Armstrong of the US Navy. Painted in 1822 by his first wife, the noted early American painter, Hannah Crowninshield Armstrong. Painting is dated "1822" and signed "H.A." This painting is owned by D.C. Weatherly, a descendant of Commodore James Armstrong.

Hannah Crowninshield Armstrong (1789-1834) was born on June 28, 1789 to Benjamin Crowninshield (1758-1836) and Mary Lambert Crowninshield (1760-1851). She was a talented portrait painter and artist. On March 29, 1819, she married James Armstrong (1794-1868) in the Crowninshield house in Salem, Massachusetts where the Reverend William Bentley resided. She died on May 4, 1834 at age 45. Armstrong later married Elizabeth Crowninshield (1794-1870) in 1836.
