Jonas Humphrey

(9 Sep 1587 - 9 Jan 1662)

Jonas Humphrey is believed to have been born in about 1585 and lived in Wendover, Buckinghamshire, England, where he was married to Frances Coley or Cooley on 11 June 1607. They had five children born in Wendover. He was a constable there on 20 Jun 1632. It is believed that Jonas Humphrey and his family arrived at Dorchester, Massachusetts Bay Colony (now part of Boston) in about 1636. He lived on the present Humphreys Street in Dorchester, on property which he bought on 10 Sep 1637 from William Hannum. Dorchester church records read: "Jonas Humphrey laid hold of the covenant the 6th day 9th Month 1639, as also his wife (Frances)." He was made a "freeman" on 16 May 1640 and "proprietor in the great lots in 1646." Jonas and his son, James, were glove makers in England. In Massachusetts, however, they turned their attention to tanning, and set down a yard in front of the house. Their tanning pits were run by six generations of descendants.
