Born as Edward Augustus TURNER … In 1817 applied for a name changes and in Feb 1818 the court allowed the name change, dropped his surname (Turner) at the request of his grandfather, Dr. Edward Augustus HOLYOKE … rumor has it that in exchange for his name change, the senior Holyoke would set-up a “legacy” for all his descendants that attend Harvard.
