Pension file W26236Peter served from Andover through most of the Revolution including two three-year enlistments in the Continental army. On 15 July 1818,Peter Martin aged fifty-nine years and resident of Newbury, Vermont made a statement related to his service for his application for a pension. He enlisted for a term of three years in March 1777 in the company of Capt. Benjamin Varnum in the regiment commanded by Col. Tupper of the Massachusetts line. He continued in service until March 1780 and was discharged at Morristown, New Jersey. In 1780, he reenlisted from West Parish for a three-year term in the company of Capt.Seth Drew in Col. Ebenezer Sprout’s regiment of the Massachusetts line. He served until June 1783 near the completion of his enlistment when he obtained a substitute to complete his term. He had service prior to his enlistment in 1777 and served a total of seven years. He was at the Battle of Bunker Hill, the battle that led to the surrender of Burgoyne, the Battle of Monmouth, and the capture of Cornwallis. Peter was awarded a pension based on his service. In 1836, his widow Hannah Martin applied for and received a widow’s pension.[1]
