In his will written 17 May 1821, James Laws made the following bequests. Eldest son James Laws, Jr. receives all the farming tools. Son William receives $300. Sons James and William divide the wearing apparel. The heirs of oldest daughter Elizabeth Gibbs, who is deceased, receive $150. Daughter Anna Sawyer wife of Eli Sawyer receives $150; daughter Lucy Sawin wife of Benjamin, $150; and daughter Rhoda Locke, $150. The remainder of the estate is divided in sixth parts, one part to each of the children including the heirs of Elizabeth. Son James has a $500 note and he is to pay back this amount by giving $100 to each of his siblings. Eli Sawyer is named executor.
