During the War of 1812 he served as a private in Captain Well's company, Lieutenant Colonel J. Russell's regiment, from September 19 to October 7, 1814 in defense of Salem harbor.
He was a trustee of Columbian College (now George Washington University) in Washington, D.C. from 1826-1828.
In 1834 he was a Presidential Elector of Massachusetts.
“Yesterday died John Moriarty aged 52 years. Funeral at his late residence on Union St. He was cashier of the Salem Bank for 25 years. An example of upright punctuality and attention to business. For many years a professor of religion.”
