Mary Abbott

(21 Jan 1811 - 6 Dec 1881)

She may have married George W. Townsend in 1829 -- but they must have split up for a while because in 1850 she is living with her mother and brother as Maria Abbott. Brother Richard in his 1853 will leaves his sister Maria Abbott her entire estate specifying it is hers and to be free from any interference by any future husband. But George W. Townsend is the executor. Mary and George have one more child after that and are together in all the census records afterward. But in 1850, George W. Townsend and Mary and their older children are altogether -- so maybe there is a Mary Abbott and a Maria Abbott --two different people both of whom married George.

Since Mary Townsend and Maria Abbott are listed on the same census sheet on the same day, they must be two different people (1850 census).
