John Strutt
(1460 - 1517)
All that is known about John and his wife Elizabeth comes from their wills. They were born in about the middle of the fifteenth century, probably in Glemsford, Suffolk, England. John was apparently a prosperous blacksmith, as he owned several buildings and lands, and left his ‘smythescraft’ shop and tools to his son Thomas. He mentions his wife, three sons and four daughters in his will. One of the daughters was deceased. Her name was Alice, she had been married to a man named Bigge and had a son John and a daughter Elizabeth. The will was dated September 12, 1516 and proved February 5, 1517, so John must have died in very early 1517. John was buried, as his will directed, in the churchyard of St. Mary the Virgin Church in Glemsford. Elizabeth lived ten more years, and her will was proved in November 1626.
