Phebe Howe

(21 Feb 1763 - 9 Sep 1842)

"Since there is only one Howe family shown in the 1790 Pennsylvania state census, her father probably was the Mr. Howe who purchased the mill from James Abbott. Family tradition states that Phebe was one of those captured by the Indians during a battle, but because of her beauty, she was not killed and she was later ransomed."---"Mary Luella Abbott Leavitt 1865-1955" by Bruce McIntire, page 19.

They had five children, but later divorced after 1813. [when she (Phebe) died they put a monument to her next to her husband James Abbott in the cemetery at Arkport, New York.

In 1838 Phebe Howe Coray Abbott went to Illinois with her son James Abbott Jr. and family and settled near her son Stephen Joseph Abbott and his family. Again Phebe was surrounded by her family and friends. In 1839 Stephen and his wife Abigail joined with the Mormon people, who on being driven out of Missouri were settling in Nauvoo, Illinois.
