Claims against the estate far exceeded its value
Stephen Powers was administrator of the estate at the request of widow Elizabeth Nutting.
In January 1774, Elizabeth petitioned the Court for relief as she had been left almost nothing from the personal estate: she found she "must submit to inconveniences and hardships altogether unknown to her while her husband lived unless your honour in his wisdom and justice should allow her something of the deceased's personal estate for the upholding of life." Elizabeth was granted 9 pounds by the Court.
