Individual Details

Elizabeth Sargent

(22 May 1758 - 22 Jun 1842)

Elizabeth was a woman of tremendous courage. Her first husband Peter Poor was brutally killed by local Indians who had hunted him down after not finding him at home with Elizabeth. She found his remains at the home of friends who had recovered his body for burial. Fearing for her life and that of her two children Christopher and Betsey, she fled through the forest on horseback with them, waded across the rivers and streams until she finally reached friends in New Hampshire who gave her refuge.

She met her second husband, William Parkinson Jr., in New Hampshire. William adopted her son Chris and daughter Betsey, and Elizabeth bore children by William. There is no record of what happened to Betsey, but Chris Poor went on to become an established businessman, married, and produced many offspring.

Life was very hard for the Parkinson family, especially during the Revolutionary War while William served. Elizabeth supplemented the family income by knitting and sewing. She traveled great distances to sell the products she designed, while her older sons managed the family farm.

It seems there was no hardship Elizabeth could not overcome, and her children inherited her bravery and can-do spirit, passing it on through subsequent generations.
