1775 May 1: Soon after the battle at Lexington William Read enlisted as a volunteer for the Revolutionary War at Amherst in Capt. Archelaus Towne's company; Lieut. James Ford & Ensign David Wallingford, officers. He enlisted for a period of 8 months and was the First Corporal of the company. They marched to Medford expecting to join Col. John Stark's regiment, but were told that regiment was full. For a few weeks they had no regiment, but Col. Stark acted as their overseer. Afterward they were assigned to Col. Ebenezer Bridge's regiment of the Massachusetts line; John Brooks, Major. William served at Cambridge until 1 Jan 1776 when he was discharged. His statement was supported by similar statements of Nathan Kendall of Amherst and Jacob Blodgett of Stoddard. Nathan Kendall said that they joined Col.
