1775 May 1: Soon after the battle at Lexington William Read enlisted as a volunteer for the Revolutionary War at Amherst in Capt. Archelaus Towne's company; Lieut. James Ford & Ensign David Wallingford, officers. He enlisted for a period of 8 months and was the First Corporal of the company. They marched to Medford expecting to join Col. John Stark's regiment, but were told that regiment was full. For a few weeks they had no regiment, but Col. Stark acted as their overseer. Afterward they were assigned to Col. Ebenezer Bridge's regiment of the Massachusetts line; John Brooks, Major. William served at Cambridge until 1 Jan 1776 when he was discharged. His statement was supported by similar statements of Nathan Kendall of Amherst and Jacob Blodgett of Stoddard. Nathan Kendall said that they joined Col. Bridge's regiment after the Battle of Bunker Hill. [Statements Jul & Aug 1832, Amherst; William & Abigail Read, Pension W.22049]
