Individual Details
John Poore
(Abt 1615 - 21 Nov 1684)
John Poore came to Newbury in 1635. His property was on the south side of the Quascacunquen River, which was later renamed Parker River after the Reverend Thomas Parker. The road over the Parker River led to Rowley. The house that he built sometime between 1642 and 1664 is still standing (with some additions). He accumulated land and between Newbury and Rowley he held about 100 acres. He held several positions in the town.
The story of his death (November, 1684) is that he was out hunting, lost his way, and perished in the cold. An inquest into his death was held which found We judge that being in the woods and following his game, he was bewildered and lost himself, and in his pursuit plucked off his clothes, and scattered them some good distance, one part from another till he had nothing on save his wastcoat and drawers, and breeches and hose and shooes. (A Memoir and Genealogy of John Poore, 1881, pp 6-7)
