On 29 March 1798, Ebenezer Pettengill yeoman of Lewiston purchased the islands of Great Moshier (101 acres) and Little Moshier (30 acres) in Casco Bay and within the town of North Yarmouth from the heirs of David Mitchell and the heirs of John Hayes for $484 to be paid in notes of hand.1
In 1816, property taxes were assessed for Ebenezer’s land for three dollars and forty-two cents. Ebenezer refused to pay this tax, and his 101-acre island farm was seized and sold at auction at Portland to Daniel How for four dollars and two cents on 18 June 1819.2
