John Austin, Jr. did not leave a will and his estate entered probate 16 April 1806 with Richard Pattee and Mary Austin as administrators. Real estate was valued at $1,000 and personal estate at $448.65. It was necessary to sell the real estate to settle the debts of the estate. Real estate was an undivided moiety of about 80 acres, and it was thought that selling just a portion of the property would be detrimental to its value. Among the items in the accounting was the cost of boarding the three minor children.1
