Probate
In his will written 7October 1801 (probate 1 February 1802), John Cogswell bequeathed to belovedwife Betty, in lieu of the dower, the use of all the estate, real, personal,and mixed, while she is a widow on condition that she provide the children allnecessary food, apparel, and schooling during their minority or until they aremarried. Wife Betty and brother Thomas Cogswell were named executors. At theremarriage or death of Betty, brother Thomas is to be sole executor and theestate to be distributed among the children: son James Bartlet Cogswell,two-eighths part and one-eighth to children Sally, Betsy, Robert, Abigail White,Hannah, and John. Real estate was a 38-acre homestead and other parcelstotaling 43 acres valued at $2,507 and personal estate owned jointly withbrother Thomas was $1,502.30. The estate was owned in equal halves by John andhis brother Thomas, making the value of John’s estate $2,004.65.
