Lawrence Copeland
(Abt 1590 - 30 Dec 1699)
Although it is a matter of some debate,it is possible that Laurence Copeland lived to be 109. What is known is that he was born in England and arrived in Boston, Massachusetts in the 1630’s and later settled in Braintree. He claimed to have been born in 1590 during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I who died in 1603. He was described by his contemporaries as marrying “late in life.” He did marry Lydia Townsend (1630-1688) in 1651. They had nine children born between 1652 and 1674. The fourth child John is our ancestor. Laurence was a landowner and farmer.
The following notation was made on his death record which at least suggests that his contemporaries believed the story about his age:
Laurence Copeland a verry aged man born in the Reign of our Gracious Soverreigne Queen Elizabeth of Blessed memory December y* 30'\ 1699.
