Benjamin Merrill

Lawyer. He graduated in 1804 from Harvard, from which he was awarded an LLD in 1845. He initially set up a practice in Lynn, Massachusetts, in 1808, but a delegation of citizens strongly urged him to leave, fearing a lawyer in their midst would cause conflict and consternation. He then established a highly successful and lucrative practice in Salem.
