Probate
In his will written 10 March 1818 (probate 21 April 1818), Ebenezer Carlton bequeathed to beloved wife Mehitable use of the east part of the house including the garret and cellar and the produce from one-third of his lands during her natural life. There are other specified provisions for her support to be provided by sons Ebenezer, Cyrus, and William. Son Ebenezer receives the use of a specified tract of land during his natural life. Sons Cyrus and Jedediah also receive specified tracts during their natural lives. If Jedediah dies with heirs, those tracts will go to Mehitable Ewins. Sons Benjamin and William receive tracts during their natural lives. His three daughters, Anna Whittier, Mehitable Ewins, and Betsey Merrill, receive one-fourth of the Wilson pasture and all the household furniture after the decease of his wife. There are also bequests to grandsons Farnum Carlton, Ebenezer Carlton, William Carlton, John Carlton, and Martin Carlton. Son Cyrus was named executor. At inventory, real estate was valued at $5,724 including the 61-acre homestead farm valued at $3,355. Property
On 28 February 1825, Cyrus Carlton and John Ewins as executors of Ebenezer’s will, for payment of $62.71, conveyed two acres of meadow in Methuen to Ebenezer Carleton, Jr. of Methuen. On 8 September 1830, Cyrus Carleton yeoman of Methuen with his wife Deborah relinquishing her right of dower for the term of the lease, in consideration of seven hundred and fifty dollars, leased several tracts of farm property to William Carleton of Methuen for a term of ten years.11 Massachusetts Land Records, Essex County, 241:89, 260:117
