Probate
In his will written 6 June 1805 (probate 15 January1806), John Chickering of Pembroke bequeathed to his wife the improvement ofthe home place with half the house and barn while she is a widow. Eldest sonJohn is to have all the lands and buildings when his widow is done with herthirds. John is also to receive the joiner shop. Son Jesse receivesseventy-five dollars when he reaches age 21. Son Elliott will receive twodollars at age 21, son Stephen received fifty dollars, and son Eben receivesone dollar. His widow is to bring up Eben until he is 14 and give him a trade.Daughters Ruth and Betsey will each receive twenty-five dollars at age 18. John Chickering served as an eight-months man inthe company of Capt. Witcher, regiment of Col. Poor of the Massachusetts linein 1778 and 1779. On 3 September 1839, widow Ruth Chickering, aged 84 years andresident of Pembroke, applied for the widow’s pension. John had other enlistmentsand served a total of 21 months, although Ruth did not know all the details ofhis service. A statement by Eunice Webb of Danvers related that John leftAndover for Pembroke just before his marriage but came back to Danvers for hiswedding. Son Stephen Chickering of Pembroke also provided a statement. Ruthreceived a pension of $26.66 per year, later raised to $30 per year.[1][1] U.
