William Dane served from Andover for a total period of three years and four months enlisting as a private and being raised to Sergeant in 1781. He served in the Continental army in the Massachusetts line and New Hampshire line and in militia units.[1]
On 7 April 1818,William Deane of Chelmsford provided a statement related to his application for a pension. He enlisted for service on 19 March 1775 in Capt. Benjamin Ames’s company in the regiment of Col. James Frye that marched to Cambridge. He enlisted for an eight-month term and served until January 1776. At that time, he enlisted for one year in the company of Capt. Benjamin Kimball in Col. Enoch Poor’s regiment on the New Hampshire line. He was discharged in March 1777 having served two months beyond his term. He returned home to Andover and enlisted again in October 1777 in Capt. Johnson’s company of Col. Tupper’s regiment and was honorably discharged in July 1778. He then enlisted for an eight-month term in Capt. David Whittier’s company of Thomas Poor’s regiment. He received a Sergeant’s warrant in 1781 and served a further three months in a militia unit.William was awarded a pension of eight dollars per month.[2]
