Death

On 21 April 1843, the overseersof the poor in Newbury and the selectmen of Newbury petitioned for Benjamin tobe committed to the State Lunatic Hospital at Worcester as an insane person whowas “manifestly dangerous to the peace and safety of the community.” The orderfor his commitment was given on 2 May 1843.[1]Benjamin’s brother Daviddid not marry. In his will written 23 March 1848, David left his wearingapparel to his nephew Levi F. Pettingell and the remainder of his estate to beequally divided among his sister-in-law Eunice Pettingell, his Levi F. Pettingell,and his niece Phebe Ann Bell.[2]
