Rich grew up in Osceola, Polk, Nebraska. He started school at Rural District 63, Polk County, graduated from Osceola High School in 1962, and attended Kearney State College (now University of Nebraska, Kearney), 1962-1966, where he studied history and geography. He taught social sciences at Battle Creek Public School, Battle Creek, Madison, Nebraska for 33 years (1966-1999). He moved to Columbus, Platte, Nebraska in 1999, where he drove bus for Columbia Area Transit from 2001-2011. He retired in 2012. In addition to his family, Rich's hobby is Polk County history. He is active in the Polk County Historical Society.
