According to his homestead papers, prior to filing for his homestead patent in 1879, Carl Lehmann, his wife and 3 children lived in Steel County, Minnesota, where Carl worked land on shares.Carl Lehman (one "n") was granted a homestead patent by the United States government to 160 acres of land in southwest quarter, section 5, township 101 north, range 57 west (Taylor township), Hanson County, South Dakota on October 11, 1888.
Carl Lehmann was granted a timber culture patent by the United States government to 160 acres of land in southwest quarter, section 8, township 101 north, range 57 west (Taylor township), Hanson County, South Dakota on October 11, 1894.
