John D. LANE

(Abt 1836 - 4 Mar 1887)

The Fargo, North Dakota boom attracted Joseph, an architect, arriving in spring of 1880 [sic] and the family following in the fall. His first building project in Fargo was the Red River Valley bank. He also remodeled the plans and supervised the building of the second court house and jail. His plans for the Columbia hotel, which was located where the public library now stands, were complete, the excavating done and the brick work going up when he died. Among the many buildings he had finished in Canada before coming to Fargo, were a courthouse and Methodist church in Orangeville and a hospital in Montreal. When the family arrived in Fargo, it was experiencing an epidemic of typhoid fever, called Red River fever. He and his children contracted it and were very ill, Joseph having pneumonia as well. He never fully recovered and had a cough until his death. Note: the source of above summary is not known but it was provided by Joel Flatt.
