William Frank "Bill" Lubich Jr., 81, of Amery and formerly of the town of Kinnickinnic, St. Croix County, died Friday, Oct. 26, at the Amery Regional Medical Center.
He was born Nov. 11, 1919, in the town of Kinnickinnic, the son of William F. and Augusta (Kroboth) Lubich, and received his education in the town of Kinnickinnic.
He worked for several area farmers prior to his enlistment in the U.S. Army at the start of World War II. He served from 1942 to 1945 and fought the battles of Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe.
After his honorable discharge from the Army he began to farm with his brother, Bill. He farmed his entire life.
On Feb. 4, 1962, he was married to Louise (Richie) Reisinger.
He thoroughly loved the outdoors and was never shy about telling fishing stories about the one that got away or his trophy catches. He also enjoyed dancing and traveling.
He was an active member of the Fletcher Pechacek American Legion Post No. 121 of River Falls and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2115 of Hudson and the 40 and 8 Club.
Many people knew Lubich through his many years in the St. Croix County Sheriff's Department. He was a constable for the town of Kinnickinnic and dance inspector and bailiff for St. Croix County.
He wore many hats. He drove school bus for River Falls for 17 years, sold seed for ARCO and had his own trucking firm to take cattle to the South St. Paul packing plant and pick up freight for the return. He was an avid gardener and his prize vegetables graced the tables of friends and neighbors, as well as the produce sections at the Roberts Grocery and Dick's IGA in River Falls.
He liked being with friends, who invariably enjoyed hearing his many stories.
He is survived by his two brothers, James and Roman (Ursula) Lubich, both of River Falls; a sister, Victoria Schorn of River Falls; three stepchildren, Rose Marie (Jack) Stayberg and Charles (JoAnn) Reisinger, both of Hudson, and David (Darlene) Reisinger of Roberts; seven step-grandchildren and 11 step-great-grandchildren; a special friend, Patricia Falde of Knapp; four sisters-in-law, Phyllis Hagen of St. Paul, Peggy Sirianni of Menomonee Falls, Katie Calguire of Columbia Heights, Minn., and Evelyn (Glenn) Larson of North Hudson.
Preceding him in death were his wife, Louise, in 1985; a sister-in-law, Delores Penman, on Oct. 20, 2001; three brothers, Edward, Frank and Hartland; and two sisters, Marie Schrank and Ethel Kusilek.
Mass of Christian Burial was at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 29, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Hudson. Officiating were Fr. Peter Szleszinski and Fr. Gerard Willger. Elsie Sandquist accompanied the Hope Choir. Readings were done by the Carmelite Sisters.
Burial, with full military honors by the Hudson Veterans of Foreign Wars, was in St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery in Hudson. Casketbearers were Mike Lubich, Todd Lubich, John Lubich, Mark Lubich, William Lubich, Paul Lubich, Don Lubich, Joe Schorn and Alfred Schrank.
Visitation was from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 28, with a prayer service at 7:45 p.m. at the O'Connell Family Funeral Home in Hudson.
Memorials are preferred to St. Patrick's building fund and/or the Carmelite Sisters of Hudson.
