Thompson, Donald I. Age 73, of Richfield, formerly of Minnetonka, left this world on February 6, 2007 to be with his Lord and Savior, following a long term battle with amyloidosis and subsequent MDS. Preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Beatrice, and stepmother, Rose. Don is survived by his best friend and loving wife of 48 years, Betty; his thankful and blessed children, Laura (Dave) Pederson, James (Sherri) Thompson, and Christopher (Tara) Thompson; his grandchildren who simply called him "Papa," Jeni & Annie Pederson, Nathan & Breanna Thompson and Nick, Wyatt & Maggie Thompson; his sister, Shirley (Lowell) Welke of Florida; cherished relatives and faithful friends. Don was born in Minneapolis, MN. He attended West High School, graduating in 1951. Don faithfully served his country in The United States Army. Following his honorary discharge, Don completed his degree in Aeronautical Engineering at The University of Minnesota in 1959. Don enjoyed a celebrated and respected 37 year career with Rosemount Engineering, dedicated to military, commercial and aerospace travel. He loved spending time at his lake home in Wisconsin. Days spent fishing were good days. His boat is not for sale. Don and his family wish to thank Dr. Martin Lee, Dr. J. P. Carlson, the entire Cancer Program Oncology Group of Park Nicollet, and the compassionate services and care of the nurses & staff of 4 South and 4 East and the Hospice Unit of Methodist Hospital. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to Park Nicollet Foundation, Lord of Life Lutheran Church, or All Saints Lutheran Church Foundation. Interment will be on Friday at Fort Snelling. Visitation also Friday, 4-7 PM at Strobeck Johnson Chapel. Memorial Service Saturday, 11 AM, All Saints Lutheran Church, 15915 Excelsior Blvd., Minnetonka, 952-934- 3550, visitation one hour before service, lunch and fellowship following the service.
