Woodward/Woodard Broughton, b. 1775, NC, d. ca 1846, Rockcastle co., KY, oldest of three sons of Job and Mary Broughton, m. Elizabeth (Bluford)?, b. 1783, NC, d. ca 1865, Rockcastle co. KY (78 years old in 1860 census). Bluford is traditionally used as Elizabeth's maiden name by her descendants in both Kentucky and Oklahoma, but this has not been proven.
Woodward purchased land on Paint Fork, Walnut Mountain and Bull Creek in Buncome co., NC, in 1802, 1813, 1816 and 1817 (Buncombe Co, NC, Deed Book III, p.318; Book XI, p76; Book XI, p.210, Book XII, p274)
As was typical of the pioneer, Woodward was always in search of more and better land. And he, the oldest of Job Broughton's three sons, was undoubtedly the pathfinder of the family. He explored so much new territory that his family was sometimes listed in the census without him.
On 28 Mar 1808, Woodward bought from John Rose 150 acres in Clay Co, KY (Clay Co. Deed Book A-12). Five months later, 27 Aug 1808, he sold this tract on the Kentucky River to his father and moved on to Knox Co. KY (Clay Co deed Book A-13). Job's pension application states that he and Mary remained in Clay Count for twelve years. But when Woodward found a more suitable place for them in Knox county, they followed him there.
See the lists of land transactions located in preceding pages of this book for proof of Woodward's relentless pursuit of land as indicated by grants through Whitley County, Laurel County and Rockcastle County, KY. His quest ended with his death, ca 1846.
