Mrs. Rena McKeever Was An Early-day School Teacher
Mrs. Rena McKeever, who would have been 90 in February, passed away at her home
in Miles City on January 3rd.
She was born in Osceola, Iowa on February 6th, 1866, the daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. David Sayre. She taught school in her native state prior to her marriage
to J.A. McKeever.
After moving to Kansas she taught in Dodge City when that town was one of the
West's most famous. She also taught in Dakota territory where she held one of
the few territorial teaching certificates ever issued.
In 1913 Mrs. McKeever moved to Montana where she taught in Dawson county and
later was County Superintendent of Schools in Garfield County for two terms.
She lived in a cattle ranch on the Big Dry until 1933 when she moved to Walla
Walla, Washington where she resided for seven years, coming to Miles City in
1941 where she resided until her death.
Mrs. McKeever is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Edna Thiller of Pasadena,
Calif.; two sons, Frank of Brusett and John of Rapid City; five grandchildren
and ten great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held last Friday in Miles City, with the Rev. W.O. Howard
of the Wesleyan Methodist Church officiating. Burial was in Miles City.
