Obituary
Services for Joseph Reed, 92, will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Behrens Mortuary
with the Rev. Charles DuBoix officiating.
Reed died Friday at his home in Rapid City,
He was born June 22, 1998 on a ranch in Western Nebraska and moved to Edgemont
with his parents when he was 8 years old.
At 14 he started working for cattle ranches in Wyoming and Montana. After a
few years of ranching, he attended a business college in Santa Barbara,
California and was in San Francisco during the 1906 fire in which he lost all
his belongings.
He worked his way back to Montana where he resumed work with cattle ranches
there. He later engaged in the horse business, buying green horses, breaking
them and selling them to ranches in Arizona and other states.
He was married to Janey Williams in 1911 at Santa Barbara, California and the
couple moved to Baker, Oregon, where they ranched for awhile before moving back
to Montana and then to Creston, South Dakota where they purchased a ranch on
the Cheyenne River and Spring Creek.
He was preceded in death by his wife in 1965.
Survivors included a daughter, Nellen C. Gillmore, Rapid City; a granddauther
and two great grandchildren, all of Rapid City.
A memorial has been established to the Shrine Hospital for Crippled Children.
Burial will be in Pine Lawn Cemetery under the direction of Behrens Montuary.
